Uncle's Ghost Collecting Hell Notes
There is a Chinese belief that you can burn paper stuff for the dead. It works like this. People make things out of paper, like paper cars, paper houses... and they buy hell notes. They setup a worshiping session and burn the stuff. The dead on the other side is believed to be able to get the items. However, there are people who say that this is absurd. And people who say this are often highly respected religious experts or Buddhist monks, so to speak.
But my mom says the dead actually can get what you burn for them. When she was quite small, her dad's friend passed away. She and her siblings used to call him uncle, even though not related. They were quite fond of him. So, a few days after his death, they were burning some hell notes for him. My mom's younger brother, who was about 2 to 3 years old at that time, said to his dad, "Look! Uncle is over there..." He was still too small to know that Uncle passed away and he could not be lying. The whole family was a bit shocked and afraid.
After burning the hell notes, they went back into the house and asked my mom's brother again about what he saw. He told them in more detail. He said he saw uncle squatting down near the spot where they were burning the hell notes, and he was collecting them one by one. The whole family was terrified.
So, for those who say ghosts cannot receive what is burnt for them, I'd like to hear them explain this story...
